XM Radio Installation

On my recently purchased 2003 Honda Civic EX I had a
stereo/entertainment installer who specializes in automotive add-on
equipment do an XM Satellite Radio Installation. This was an older type
that utilized an FM Radio demodulator and an XM converter mounted under
the driver seat with the antenna cable routed from this as well as a
cable to the Pioneer display unit.In order to do this, they had to remove
the seat and then put it back. The unit was installed and it works as I
expected. However, after the installation the SRS(air bag system) light
came on and would not go out.The vehicle works fine otherwise. Is there
something the entertainment installer did that could affect the SRS
indicator to stay on? Or is this most likely a coincidence and it is an
unrelated bug not related to the installation? I am not an expert on
vehicle wiring by any stretch of the imagination.Any speculations would
    be appreciated.

  3. If he unplugged it with the battery connected, this could trigger the
    light.

You may have to take it to the dealer to have this light diagnosed and
    reset.

Speculations you shall receive. Many cars have a sensor in the passenger
seat to disable the air bag if the seat is not occupied. Perhaps
disconnecting this sensor is what tripped the SRS light, or perhaps the
installer forgot to plug the sensor back in.

This was a consideration when I integrated XM into my factory sound system,
disconnecting the harness under the seat "will" trip the SRS light. I
avoided it, too bad you went with FM modulation, a direct RCA connection to
the stock civic head unit sounds "make it or break it" better. I've read a
somewhat shady way to reset the SRS light on the web or usenet so you can
google for it, I would take it to the dealer.

Did you do it yourself or did you pay someone to install it?

Speak to me more slowly ;-)
I currently have an MP3 player and a Belkin FM transmitter that I use in my
2003 Civic Hybrid (stock one-CD sound system). I had thought about going
to a Crutchfield gadget that is essentially the same thing, but inserts
into the antenna line, and accepts RCA inputs. It's still an FM
transmitter, though. Is this what you've got?

I've also looked at some Crutchfield gadgets that plug in as if they were a
tape deck or CD changer, but there is no Crutchfield confirmation that
these fit my Honda sound system.

  8. What most people try to get, if possible, is an cable that plugs into
the CD changer port on the stock Honda head unit, and has RCA jacks on
the other end--allowing you to plug *anything* in to the radio and play
it simply by touching the "CD changer" key on the radio.

Yeah that's the gist of it. I installed it myself with a standard PIE Honda
Aux adapter, just makes the changer port into a standard RCA input with no
FM modulation at all, you can connect any stereo input. You're stock head
unit will be in "CD-Changer" mode but will be playing your auxillary device.
I have it hooked up to the old add on Pioneer XM-914 and it sounds as good
    as it's gonna.

Is it a pain to take everything apart to get to the back of the radio?

Also, did you have to run a wire under the headliner (from the antenna
to the radio)? If so, how hard was that?

I am thinking of getting a Serrius radio (not XM) because they don't
    have as many ads.

That's what I want then... RCA jacks into a stock 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid
CD-system. Waht I couldn't tell for sure is whether my radio is the "PIE"
    interface.

What brand and model do you have?

XM Radio USED to have ads on some of their channels.....no more.I just
recently got it installed and have yet to hear one ad on their MUSIC
channels.Other channels, like ESPN Radio and CNN Radio have ads,but that
is understandable because that is merely an uplinked service. There are a
couple of music channels like the 60's and 80's themed music that have
interactive DJ's and call-in programs, but that is it.I do not know the
reason for dumping their ads,but it happened nevertheless.
As to the SRS light,it was a simple reset of an onboard maintenance
diagnostic computer that controls the dash idiot lights.Apparently
disconnecting the battery temporarily and then plugging it in will not
clear the light. It sounds like a legalized dealer racket to me.It cost
me $80 to do this.I would hate to think I would have to pay $80 every
time I wanted to change the battery......sheeesh!

  14. Bullshit.

The ads that used to be on MUSIC channels are now, ALL of them, on the
    comedy channels and whatnot.

I'm about to throw XM out the window.

WHO in the heck listens to the comedy channels??! I bought it to listen
to music.I have had XM for a year and a half, not including the 5 months
the radio was out being transferred from a wrecked vehicle.NOT ONCE did
I ever listen to one of those stupid comedy channels.

  16. I do.

Or, I did--until they put ALL the commercials on there.

Trust me, XM didn't lower the amount of commercial time they sell; they
just moved the commercials off the music channels so that they could
scream "no commercials" to the world, to compete with Sirius.

  17. Not sue if anybody already mentioned this but if you go to
www.7thgencivic.com then to the DIY section the procedure for resetting the
    SRS is outlined there.

I have a 02 Si Hatchback and the installation was fairly straightforward.
The antenna was the 'hardest' part but the hatchback has a real handy hole
into the hatch with a rubber plug that I ran the antenna cable through then
under the carpet and under the side trim to the receiver under the passenger
seat. Removal of the dash is trivial with a Helm's manual so you know
exactly where the clips and screws are. I drilled a hole into the back of
the pocket under the stereo for the control unit which the Pioneer 914 has a
perfect friction fit, it looks great. I would consider the Delphi Roady for
this application and am tempted to upgrade just for a remote control. I
think I could deal with either service but I started with XM and have no
    complaints with the programming.
