"Rattling Sound" after pressing accelerator...

I drive a '97 Honda Civic DX. For the past few months, when I first
start driving my car, whenever I press the accelerator there is this
noticeable "rattling" sound that gets louder the harder I press on the
accelerator. The sound stops when I take my foot off the accelerator.
After about 15-20 minutes of driving, however, the "rattling" sound
pretty much always goes away (even after pressing the accelerator).
Does anyone know what the possible problem is??

probably heat shields that have come loose due to corrosion
on your exhaust system. Just take them off, no more
rattle. You don't really need them.

If it sounds like it's coming from the engine, then I would guess piston slap.

This was a common problem with earlier 90s Civics. If your 97 Civic
has a heat shield around your exhaust pipe (called the B-pipe), then
looks like it is on the way out (rusting out). The shield will rattle,
but as the exhast warms up the shield will expand and stop rattling.
But, if this is your problem, after a while, it will keep on rattling
as the corrosion winds its way up and down the B-pipe. Costs about
$250-300 to replace at a dealer.
    Hope this helps.

Remove the heatshield of the exhaust manifold, and you may see that it is
cracked (not cheap, around $500) probably coming from where the oxygen
    sensor screws into place.
If so, take it to your Honda dealer; there is a recall for exhaust
components and they will replace it for free if that's the case. But be
sure you have them do it under extended emitions warranty.
The sound goes away because the manifold expands and "closes" the crack
    until it cools down again.
Please let us know if that's the case.

In the case of piston slap, roughly how much does it cost to get this
problem repaired?? Is it worth repairing (i.e., is it something that
will develop into a more serious problem in the long run??)

it is the exhaust manifold, believe me

How do I check then, to see if it is the exhaust manifold? What does
it look like and where is it located? I have next to no knowledge of
car parts. Also, I bought my car at a used car dealer... would I still
be able to get it replaced for free??
