New Used Accord

    Hi guys. I just bought my sone a new used 98 Honda Accord EX.
    It has 25.7K miles and is a one owner. Appears to be very clean.

    I notice when it is started from cold, after siting all night, it seems
    to have one noisey lifter (or some other tapping) that gradually
    becomes softer and goes away after a minute of idling.

    O thought I'd have my mechanic look at that and do a complete once-over
    look over. Any other suggestions to look at.

    I talked the dealer building a 36K 3 year extended warranty into the sale
    price so anything mechanical outside of normal wear and tear is covered.

    It's a great looking car. That deep burgandy with gray leather. They call
    it purple on the registration, but it isn't purple.

    Yes, it's the "eggplant" color.. another guy called it "plum".
    I'm not too hot on the color, but when buying used you got to
    go on a lot of other ingredients before color. This car was
    a one owner, per Carfax, and per the dealer's records, and
    has 25K miles.

    Good idea on the valve adjustments. What is a major
    Honda maintenance schedule?

    Steve,

    Is that the color that my wife calls 'eggplant'? We've seen the eggplant
    color on '98 Odysseys. Looks black under many lighting conditions, or
    inside a garage?

    Great color in broad daylight, but shows EVERY spot of dirt, right? :-(

    P.S. A basic valve adjustment would be prudent, anyway...

    Since you mentioned that you are taking it to a mechanic--I would advise
    you to have the mechanic do a complete tune-up unless the previous owner
    gave you service records showing that a tune up was done in the past
    couple of years. I usually get a complete tune-up at least once every two
    years. Some people get a complete tune-up once a year. In your case--you
    should also have them adjust the valves and check those lifters.

    Steve, this could be caused by something as simple as a cheap oil filter.
    The anti-drain-back valve (ADBV) is the rubber seen through the peripheral
    oil filter holes. The ADBV is supposed to act as a check valve to keep the
    oil passages full after the car has been shut off. A leaky ADBV therefore
    would cause the oil to drain back to the sump, resulting in a few minutes to
    re-prime them once the engine is restarted. I would try going with a good
    quality filter before I would take it to a mechanic for a major tune-up with
    only 25k miles on it. Try an Honda Filtech, Wix, Bosch, Mobil1 or Napa Gold
    filter.

    Thanks! I am going to get a lube/filter and grease done and go
    to Mobil 1 for it.

    I like Mobil 1. I run it in my Honda Valkyrie too and it is
    very happy with it.

    What do you guys run for oil? Or is that a dangerous question to
    ask around here? LOL!!

    You're right, oil is a hot button with some people. I don't think you can
    go wrong with Mobil 1 5W-30 or 10W-30. The 0W-30 is not quite as robust for
    some reason. It does not seem to protect as well--and seems to result in
    higher wear numbers. I don't know what kind of oil change intervals you
    want to run, but if you are changing at 5k or less, conventional oil might
    be more cost effective. Chevron and Pennzoil are two of the better
    conventional oils. I am currently running conventional oil, but I have
    heard good things about the Mobil 1 0W-20, and may try it in my '02 Accord.
