Is it worth sinking more $$ into my 2004 Honda Element AWD with 180k miles?

    Would love some more opinions on my dilemma: I have a 2004 Honda Element AWD with about 180k miles. It’s been a great car, but it’s starting to develop some major issues, and I’m trying to figure out if it’s worth putting the money into repairs or selling it and moving on. If I do sell it, I’d be looking for something similar — another AWD or 4WD vehicle with decent ground clearance. Let me know your thoughts.

    Major Issues:

    • Transmission: Needs to be replaced (quoted $3000-$4000 for full service with remanufactured transmission)

    • Front struts: Need to be replaced because the front strut mounts are binding on the bearings when I turn, one side worse than the other. (quoted $800 for full strut replacement service)

      • Side tangent: the struts themselves have about 21.5k miles, so I’m wondering if it makes more financial sense to have a shop replace the complete strut assemblies instead of just doing the mounts and bearings…
    Other / Minor Issues:

    • CEL: Code P2647 – VTEC oil pressure switch circuit high voltage.

      • Not sure yet what needs to be done exactly. It could be related to a faulty VTEC solenoid or oil pressure switch, or possibly sludge buildup in the engine. I might need an engine flush or to clean/replace the VTEC solenoid and screen…
    • Minor engine oil seep

    • Rear Suspension: The camber bolts on the rear control arms are seized. Les Schwab said they can’t correct the rear alignment until those are replaced.
    I’m estimating the car is worth around $4000 with the issues (clean record otherwise).
