How much would it cost to replace rear shocks

I took my 95 Honda Accord for a oil change at a gas station. They
found out there is a leak from one of the rear shocks. They said it
would cost about $600 to replace both rear shocks. About $115 for a
shock and 3 1/2 hours of labor. They said it is difficult to change.
Is this a reasonable price? But it sounds too much for me. Anyone has
idea how much would it really cost to do such a job. Thanks.

Call a couple local tire/shock places for a quote. They want $138 for
an hour of labor? Don't go back there for sure! It probably isn't even
    leaking. Sounds like a scam.

No, this price is outrageously high! Tires stores like PEP boys will replace
all four struts for much less than this! (Not that I would recommend PEP
boys, but you get the point.)

OMG, that is insane... I know it's not the same, but I replaced all 4 on my
VW this summer. I got a good deal on the struts and hardware (<$200 total)
and spent a saturday doing the install. Granted the accord may take longer
to install, but that price is HIGH.

  5. It's obviously a scam. It's easy enough to check for leaking fluid
yourself but wait a month or two for the stuff they sprayed there to dry
up... or wash it off by spraying some solvent, like WD40, on it. If you
find you really do have a leak, find somebody else competent to do the job
    - those guys are obviously not. In your situation I'd tell them they just
    lost your business.

As for the part price, I'd guess that $115. is close to Honda's list price,
which an independent shop will not pay - IOW they're trying to get their
hand *deep* in your pocket. There are also aftermarket shocks which work
at least as well as the Honda OE parts - see <www.tirerack.com> or
    <www.shox.com>.
