Well, not only can I not look at or test drive a Fit, but now the dealers in my area are no longer
taking orders for the Fit. Nice.

You may be happy with the Mazda 3 or it's earlier design the Protege 5.
Check cars .com for Pro5's from 02 and 03 for sale in your area. Wife
LOVES her yellow 5 speed, and on trips we get right close to 40 m.p.g.

This is typical for a popular new Honda (I think Honda doesn't always
know how popular a new car will be). When I was in college long ago,
and the Accord first came out, one of my teachers had to order one from
a dealer in a small town 150 miles away, since there were none to be
    had locally (San Diego).

Now I'm in Loveland, Colorado, and I just heard that a FOAF had to go
to Kansas City to buy a new Fit.

Frankly, I think it's worth the wait, rather than buying some other
    brand.

I see the 2007 Mazda3 hatchback now comes with a Mazdaspeed turbocharger. 230 horsepower for a
little car like that is mindblowing. I wonder if I'll be able to test drive it or is Mazda going to
pull a Honda bullshit move of advertising something that's not available.

It's not worth the wait for me because in my area, there's nothing to wait for even though there are
3 Honda dealers here. They're not taking any more orders for the rest of the year. Either Honda
already sold out this year's production, or there's a recall, or they've stopped production, I have
no idea. I'll I'm being told is that they're not available. It's a truely unique experience to go
to 3 car dealers who won't even try to sell you a car. hahahahahahahaha

I've been looking to see one on the road here in Los Angeles, and I
think I finally saw my first the other day, looks like a Focus and a
    Matrix had a love-child. Wasn't there a funky little Civic micro-van
    about twenty years ago?

My Accord lease expires in a few months, and I've been looking at the
smaller models ... though I expect to end up with another Accord, ugly
LED taillights and all, unless I run off the reservation and get my
    hands on a Toyota.

It does seem a slow introduction for the Fit, but it took quite a
while before the new Civics were common on the street, as they are
now. Selling like hotcakes, apparently. Are the sales targets for
the Fit as high as for the Civic? Probably not.

Seems like a pretty stupid thing for Honda to do. It's like they're deliberately trying to drive
people to the competition. Seems like everybody is coming out with subcompact 5 door cars right
now. I have no problem getting one from Chevy, Ford, Mazda, Hyundai, Saturn, Toyota, Volkswagen...
And if the Fit is selling like hotcakes like you say, why have I not seen a single one on the road
yet? Looks like a big hoax to me.

Every business has the right to refuse service to people, if they wish.
Perhaps you've made a 'name' for yourself in your area.

  11. Depends on the demand in your area, I suppose. Give it a few months, and
I'm sure a Fit will be at your local dealer. I live in a small city with
one Honda dealer, and it took a few months before I started to see new
Civics in abundance here. But I have already seen a few Fits.

This is a simple case of supply and demand.
Fits are being produced as fast as quality will allow, that's all there is to it.

Together with record high gas prices, and the fact that people act like scared sheep, or Chicken Little
at every bump in the road, doesn't help dampen demand either..

chill. honey gets you a lot further than vinegar.

just call around until you find someone that has the car you want. last
time i bought a new car, i did that and ended up traveling some
considerable distance to get the exact vehicle i wanted. as long as you
can test drive locally, doesn't mean you have to buy locally.

I meant the Civic is now selling like hotcakes.

There are so many hotcakes, er, cars, on the road here in Los Angeles,
Honda could sell a few hundred Fits a day before the odds of actually
seeing one on the road got reasonable.

Saw a skit on Mad TV last night involving a Yaris. Is "Yaris" funnier
    than "Fit"?

No thanks. I'm not going out of my way for a cheap subcompact like a Honda Fit. I already traveled
60 miles to a dealership who told me over the phone that they had one on the lot. I was there less
than an hour later and it wasn't there. I don't mind traveling for a vehicle that I know I want,
but I don't know if I want a Fit because I can't even see one, let alone test drive one. Seems like
I have no choice but to give up on Honda. All three local Honda dealerships had my name, address,
and phone number for over 2 months and none of them ever returned my calls.

You should check what you're smoking more often. I nver get above 30
    mpg
out of my sedan (A/C on, 5sp). I think Mazda states 35 mog highway.
There is no way (unless all your freeway trips are downhill) you can
    reach 40 mpg.

I do recommend Protege or Protege 5 nevertheless. Excellent car.
Light and agile. Superb handling and unlike civic from the same era it
    has
wonderful seats. Civic lower cushions are too short (I'm 5'10").

The smallest 5 door from Mazda is somewhere between compact and midsize
in weight in dimension. And Mazda 2 is woefully underpowered (so I've
    heard).
Unless there is a 5 door mazdaspeed 2 scheduled for the US I'm not sure
    what you mean.
Kabura is 3 door I think and is more compactish than subcompactish.
What is the Mazda subcompact you're talking about?
I'd like to get one with the 1.8l engine miata no longer needs.
