You tell me what " American" is as far as cars are concerned
anymore........we have Nissan pickup trucks being built in Tennesssee by
American labor, even though the parent company is Japanese. We have
Chrysler who is part owned by Daimler-Benz a German automaker. And lots
and lots of Ford make autos with Japanese made parts in them.In this
global economy the distinction of nationalistic source of manufacture is
blurring and disappearing.Welcome to the 'Brave New World' ! (to
    paraphrase Aldous Huxley).

  5. Yep.

Like the Ford Crown Victoria. Oops--where's the manufactured, now? Oh,
    yeah--Mexico. So scratch that one.

Like the Honda Accord, manufactured by your brothers, sisters, cousins,
aunts, and uncles in Marysville, OH. Real men drive REAL American cars,
built with American labor, on American soil.

To tell where your car was built, check the VIN number, and this site:

I put my VIN for my Honda Civic into 3 of the 6 mentioned databases for
it.While I am curious,CARFAX charges approx. $20 to find out
information;it is not worth that much to know to me.The other 2 only
told me that my vehicle was made in the US and it was manufactured at a
vehicle assembly plant that alluded to it as
"L".What is "L"? That does not do me much good as a BASIC history. It
also told me my checksum digit is valid, whatever the hell that means. It
also could not identify my vehicle type from the series of numbers that
was SUPPOSED to identify my vehicle type.(It said "UNKNOWN").Well,it is
a good thing I know it myself, huh? From what I can glean of the FREE
check sites it is not very good.Perhaps a CARFAX detailed report would
be more forthcoming if I wanted to shell out $23.99.But,for the casual
interface user, these online VIN ID systems are almost useless....

"L" is the East Liberty plant in Ohio.

That's not a VIN. It's the maker's own specific vehicle code.

The databases only work with the standardized VIN number that has been used
    since 1981.

The checksum digit is a digit that formed when a certain mathematical
operation is performed on the other digits, usually addition. That way
by performing the mathematical operation and comparing the result with
the checksum you can determine if any of the other digits in the number
    have been altered.

I wouldn't mind buying an American car if they were up to par quality wise with
Japanese cars. American cars are always oversized on the outside, undersized
in the inside, and lack quality all over. Only exception is the pickup truck.
American manufacturers have that one down pretty good
