Difference between brand name intakes and "cheaper" intakes

Hey all, I wanna get an intake and exhaust for my brother for christmas. He
says he wants an AEM cold air intake with bypass valve (so water wont get in
the cylinders). Is there *really* a difference between the AEM ones and the
other "no-name" ones? I figure I can afford to buy him more performance
parts if I go with the cheaper ones. Also, my budge is around $500 USD, so
what would be the best to get to increase HP and handling for his stock
    Acura Integra '97 LS? Thanks

My "Bomz" CAI cost $60 including shipping (Ebay),but came with no
    instructions,just a bag of pipes,couplers,filter,and clamps.It took awhile
to piece it together, see how it's routed, and to figure out what intake
parts to remove, and how to do it.It also has no bypass valve, although I
suspect I could fit someone else's bypass to the system. The tubing is
polished aluminum with yellow couplers, although I believe they offer
    colored anodized pipes,too.

I'm still very satisfied with it.

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE INTAKES BUT SINCE YOUR BUDGET IS AROUND
$500 THAT WOULD BE ENOUGHT TO GET THE AEM V2 WICH RETAILS ON THE AEM WEBSITE
FOR $368.75 AND IT IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY BECAUSE IT CLAIMS TO GET YOU
ABOUT 15 HP LIKE ANY OTHER INTAKE BUT IT GETS YOU ANOTHER 10-15HP ON TOP OF
THAT SO YOU COULD GET 25+ BECAUSE OF THE TECHNOLOGY IT CLAIMS AND IT LOOKS
NICE AND IS STREET LEGAL AND HAS THE RELIABILITY OF AEM

bullshit, the v2 will not get you 25 hp, maybe an extra .5 hp, and a normal
intake will get you about 2 hp, so thats 2.5 hp, intakes do not make that
large of a difference unless your boosted. As for quality, a pipe is a pipe,
get a no name intake *as long as its mandrel bent* and get a good filter,
aem filters are made by k&n, as good as you'll probably find, then buy a
bypass valve seperate. Save money and get the same results. If he's that
concerned about brandname, go get the AEM intake for him, but the only
difference is the sticker and the couplers are black with AEM written on
    them.

Actually, for the RSX-S,an AEM CAI produced 20 extra HP,per Honda Tuning
Magazine's dyno test. The issue was last year, around Apr or May.They did
flow bench and dyno tests on several short rams ,the two CAIs,and the K&N
    filter.They had a lot of nice graphs,too.

The "Bomz" CAI I put on my 94 GSR made a -very- noticeable increase in
power, even below the VTEC point.I believe that has to be more than a half
    or 2.5 HP increase.

  6. Yep. I believe they tested the RSX because it must have had an atrocious
stock intake tract, resulting in big gains from an aftermarket one.

How many other cars will see those kinds of gains, I wonder?

DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT OTHER CARS ARE CAPABLE OF GETTING THAT KIND OF
POWER MOST HONDA'S AND ACURA'S AND IMPORT CARS THAT HAVE A HIGH RPM REDLINE
    .. THE V6 HONDA ACCORD GOT 18.7HP @6500 RPM,A 94-01 INTEGRA LS/GS/RS
    NON-VTECH GOT 9.1HP@4250RPM (STICK SHIFT),HONDA S200 GOT 9.5HP@8500RPM,IF
YOU DONT THINK THAT THESE GAINS ARE POSSIBIBLE THEN READ IMPORT TUNER,SUPER
STREET, AND IMPORT MAGAZINES, AND CHECK OUT THE OFFICIAL AEM WEBSITE FOR
APPLICATIONS, PRICES, AND DYNO SHEETS.FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE NOT INFORMED
ABOUT CARS AND SHIT LIKE THAT ,WELL, YOU MIGHT WANT TO RESEARCH YOUR ANSWERS
AND INFO FIRST BEFORE EXPRESSING YOUR 2 CENTS.

P.S. AND FOR THE RECORD THE V2 IS UNLIKE ANYOTHER INTAKE BECAUSE IT USES A
DUAL CHAMBER INTAKE PIPE TO CREATE MULTIPLE FREQUENCIE SOUND WAVES WHICH IS
THE REASON THE GAINS ARE SO HIGH.

wrong, you can be stopped in 2 ways, one, the legal way, contact your isp to
complain, second, the not so legal way =\

    and your contradicting yourself

AND IT IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY BECAUSE IT CLAIMS TO GET YOU
    ABOUT 15 HP

    INTEGRA LS/GS/RS
    NON-VTECH GOT 9.1HP@4250RPM

personally, i feel the v2 is all hype until i see numbers on it, as for a
regular cai, of course it makes a difference, but the lower the stock power
of an engine, the less you'll get out of an intake, i have a cai on my
civic, made a difference yes, but not a huge difference, for the money, go
get a cheap cai and slap a aem sticker and filter on it, and id doubt your
    brother could find a difference

Thanks for all your replies.. I'll look into the no-name CAIs.. I mean 385
USD for a piece of tubing seems a little much =).. i wish there were sites
out there that had comparisson matrices of all the CAIs and performance
parts, but i guess there are too many cars and setups to really have good
stats on them. also, it's really easy to play with statistics on these
things (hint: import tuning mags, etc..).. just my thoughts. maybe i'll
post a short list of CAIs that I narrowed it down to later on. btw, anyone
know of a good place online to get cheap parts? i wish there was a
    pricewatch.com for car parts =)..
