Coil coincidence?

    1991 Honda Accord EX.

    Did a full tune up Saturday, left it running to warm while cleaning up the
    garage. As soon as it got warm (i.e. fan kicked on), it stumbled then died and
    wouldn't restart. Had no spark. Tested the coil, found it dead (6.5k ohms).

    Strange thing is that this happened on my 1992 Civic too. Exact same
    circumstances, exact same symptoms, nearly identical reading (7k ohms) on the coil.

    Is this a coincidence, or am I missing something here?

    +++++++++++++++

    Any chance your (-) battery connection or the other end where it bolts
    to chassis is loose / corroded?? Fans cut in, current goes high, ground
    sparks, goes high resistance, finds alternate path to ground (thru
    various electronics).

    Didn't matter as much on old, non-electronic vehicles.

    Just my guess. :-( Let us know if you find any such thing.

  3. I notice your coil is bolted on the engine. Bad mistake -IMO.
    Lots of vibration. I use damper rubber soles on them.

    I bet the coil won't die at 750 rpm or higher. The stalling, I
    believe, kills it after a little bit of heat and buffalo vibration.
    Just cutting the ignition won't harm it. - IMO
