Clinking transmission in 2000 CR-V

    Hello All!
    I have a concern about my 2000 CR-V (63K miles 5-spd.). The
transmission makes a strange sound, which could be described as a
quiet clink. This can happen on gears 1, 2, or 3 – could not hear it
on higher gears. The clink occurs after I release the clutch
completely and press the accelerator pedal. It also may occur when
releasing gas pedal. Seems almost like it clinks when you load or
unload the transmission. The odd thing is the symptom goes away after
driving for a few minutes. How fast it stops doing this depends on
how much work the clutch gets: the more work – the sooner it stops.
    There are no drivability problems.
Is it a sign of clutch going out, or there could be a bigger problem?
    Any input is appreciated!

    TIA!
    Dmitry.

  2. Dmitry,

You didn't say if it's an AWD CRV, but have you rotated your tires
regularly? Also, ignore what the manual says and get your rear diff
fluid changed if it hasn't been done yet. The fact that your noise goes
away after a few minutes makes me think you're heating up the rear diff
    (which makes it slip)

Just a wild guess, but easy to test.

If you've got any snow / ice around Boston, try locking up the park
brake at speed and see if all 4 wheels lock. ie: 20 mph. If not, your
rear diff is slipping too much.

Let us know if you find anything.

    Thanks Curly,

It is an AWD CR-V. I will try what you suggesting. Although, I
changed the rear diff. fluid at about 30K miles (a year and a half
ago) because the car had developed the famous "whine" in tight turns.
The transmission oil was changed then as well. Maybe it's time to do
that again. I will keep you posted.

    Thanks Curly,
I just changed the diff oil on my 2002 CR-V EX, 37000km and 18 months old.
I had a noise when the AWD was kicking in and with tight turns. But it was
the noise when the wheels were spining on snow/ice that came first. The
noise while turning started only 2 days before my appointment.
    It got covered under warranty.

    Just a report back:
I found the proper procedure to check the AWD system: all wheels off
the ground, shift to first and set the parking brake - the car should
stall. Did this last weekend (had to borrow a couple of jacks from a
friend). It stalls almost immediately even with a little gas at about
1500 RPM – did not want to abuse the car with more gas. So I believe
the AWD system is fine. BTW, it takes about 20 to 30 minutes of
driving before the clinking is gone completely
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Dmitry.

  6. Dmitry,

What about your tire sizes? You know they all have to be the same
diameter, so if the front ones are getting bald, you can do this
experiment: Tempporarily swap one tire to the rear to see if your
    symptom changes.

Another guy on the group said his Honda dealer tried to sell him regular
ATF for his rear diff. I hope your fluid is the real 'Dual Pump Fliuid'
If not, that could maybe explain your symptom...

    Hi,

Are the front tyres much more worn than the rears. This could make the click
sound as this may cause the 4wd to engage (for a short time).

The tires were replaced about 5K miles ago with a set of Yokohama Avid
Touring stock size (205/70/15). As of now there is almost no visible
wear on the front nor on the back tires. I will rotate them this
weekend, nevertheless and report the results. The clanking has
developed less then 2K miles ago, BTW.

    Thanks everybody for the input.
    Dmitry.

  9. Hmmm, it could be similar to a slight knock(?) I hear in our 2K Accord when
the drive takes up on releasing the clutch - again when cold and it does
take a while for it to go away. It's particularly noticeable in stop-go
traffic of course - I tried the gentlest clutch engagemnet I can manage but
can't make it quit. With the car stationary, pushing the clutch in and out
    does not make it happen.

With the car in neutral, try jacking one front wheel up and turning the
wheel back and forward - there is some slop in the axle-C/V joints and you
can compare the slight knock it makes with the noise you're hearing.
That's my best guess but it could also be an engine mount or something in
the flex exhaust coupling as the engine rocks a bit on change of drive.
