I parked my civic in the driveway and the windshield developed a crack
starting from the upper left corner and extending down about 6 inches.
It is about 3 mos old and still under warranty.

I know the Elments had a terrible problem with this, is the also Civic
prone to cracking? Anyone have any experience returning one of these
to the dealer for a warrantyt reparir? I ask because I live in the
boonies and it ends up shooting the day going to the dealer.

  2. No, windshields are never covered by warranty! Freeloader!

  3. I don't know if it's a warranty item, but most insurance companies replace
them with little or no deductible (in case it's not a warranty item). In the
state of Florida the insurance companies are required to replace them with
no deductible ... and many replacement shops have mobile techs that come to
your car to do the replacement work

  4. Why in the world would you put a $200 claim in on insurance? That's not
    what insurance is for.

If you diddle around with $200 claims, your insurance company will be
    *very* annoyed with you.

Just wait until you become a homeowner. The first time your policy is
cancelled because you filed a claim when you spilled paint on the living
room carpet, you'll understand. Insurance is for catastrophes--not
silly little things like $200 cracked windshields.

Using insurance for that is like going to the emergency room for a cold.

If the crack was due to defect, you can give them a call and might get it
under warranty, especially if they know about this "prone" to spontaneous
    cracking.

    Otherwise.. no.

I don't agree. I've used insurance for *many* cracked windshields over
the years... I'm thinking somewhere in the 8 to 10 range on various
cars. I think that's what it's for in fact.

Besides, I think you're paying for it anyway. Since the insurance
companies have all the numbers they know statistically how many they'll
have to replace out of 10K or 100K cars... same for thefts etc.

Houses burn to the ground, but they also get some amount of stuff stolen
from them which is a *lot* less than the value of the house. Doesn't
mean I won't claim it just because it's less than $200K or whatever.

And I am a home owner and have had insurance for many many years now.

  7. Yes ... heaven forbid they have to pay a $200 claim after I've paid them
almost $3,000 per year for the past 30 years ...

My policy explicitly covers the windshield under the comprehensive clause,
I'm paying for the coverage, so I'll file a claim.

And windshields aren't $200 ... have you priced one lately? The one I just
had insurance replace in our 1994 explorer was over $600, and the 2000 Civic
    was over $400.

Oh ... and by the way ... I AM a homeowner with the mortgage paid in full
.... (and if I was stupid enough to spill paint on the carpet I'd pay for it
myself, because THAT's not what insurance is for).

Douchebag, there was a TSB for the Element and the 2003 Civic for
cracking caused by mismath between the glass and channel. Many
windshields were replaced by dealers and a fix was implemented that
involved hammering the channel back in place.

I totally agree with you, however some places charge more for the windshield
replacement if they know it's an insurance claim. When I had my 2000 Civic,
I asked how much a replacement windshield would cost from Speedy Autoglass
in Nova Scotia. They told me that if I paid, it was $300 CDN ($188 US) and
if it was through insurance it would $500 CDN ($313 US).

It's that sort of overcharging of that drives up the price of insurance.
Its pure gouging and as far as I'm concerned, it should be illegal (if it
    isn't already.)

Hmmm, I've had four windshields replaced by our insurance company due to
rock damage from passing vehicles over the past ten years and our rates have
not gone up nor has there been any threat of cancellation. In fact,
every few years I cross shop rates and have never found a better deal than
    we are getting with Nationwide.

It probably helps that no one in our family has had a traffic ticket or
    accident in many, many years.

I don't think it is windshield replacements which cost the insurance
    companies the big bucks.

    John,

If you have a crack with NO visible point of impact from a stone or
other object, it is a stress crack which IS covered under warranty.

Take your car back to the dealership and get a new w/s.....If in fact it
is a "stress crack" they will replace it with no questions asked.

I've been in the autoglass business for 24 yrs and I'm not going to get
into a pissing contest with ppl that don't have a CLUE about what they
    are talking about.

SO, if you have any questions email me and I will do my best to help
    you.
