Check Engine Light-- Speedometer Broken??

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Matthew Brown, Apr 29, 2004.

  1. Yesterday the speedometer on my 1988 Prelude S finally bit the dust. It has
been jumping around for about a year. Today I noticed that the Check Engine
Light came on -- so I pulled the carpet to get a look at the ECU. It read a
Code 2-- "Vehicle Speed Pulser" in the shop manual.

Would this be consistent with a speedometer cable breaking, or do I have a
bad sensor? I know my cable is bad because the whining sound that goes with
    the jumpy speedometer is gone.

I thought this assembly was all mechanical on my car-- but I obviously have
    a sensor also?

    Any advice is most appreciated.

    Thanks,

yes, the two are directly related. sounds like a cable.

the pulser is driven off the speedo. when the cable breaks, the pulser
gets no signal as well as the needle not working.
