Check engine light question ?

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by .·°~ SleazzyWeasel ~°·., Jul 8, 2006.

  1. My son put a flow through cat on HIS '98 Accord and after
one day the check engine light lit up.

Assuming this is an O2 Sensor issue, is there anyway to
correct the light being on all the time?

A higher temp O2 Sensor? or...?

    hey
its probably a faulty o2 sensor
you can first do a visual check to see if its plugged in or even there
    ...
then just a scope to check it out
    just replace it

  3. thanks Ivan. I just installed 2 new HONDA sensors on his
car about three months ago. Can it have gone bad that
    fast? Doesn't seem logical...but...who knows.

Maybe the flow through cat is getting too hot for the
    sensor?

    Anyone ??

  4. ---------------------------------------------------

Do a google search to see why high-flow cats will generate check engine
lights. The o2 sensors are there to determine if the gases that enter
the cat are coming out CLEAN. High-flow cats dont always get things
clean enough. Depending on where you are, you might be breaking certain
    laws too.

    1. get the code.
    2. are you seriously surprised if you have a 2-sensor model? the second
sensor is there to check on the health of the cat [as per its program]
and reports accordingly. a non-standard cat gets fitted, and "hey
presto", it reports accordingly! that's not rocket science. modern
cats don't restrict flow as much as the retrogrouches [mistakenly]
continue to say they do, so get the facts straight and put the original
    back on.

if performance is required, get an older obdc0 or obdc1 vehicle and look
    to headers and engine work.

Got an error code? That light has more behind it than just photons, you
    know.

That was rude. Let me try again:

You need to retrieve the error code before any serious diagnostics can be
performed. You cannot "assume" anything. Places like AutoZone will read the
    code for free.

The MIL is just an idiot light that indicates that the engine's computer
has recorded at least one of a couple hundred possible errors. It's
basically meaningless until you get the code read. For all you know, it has
nothing at all to do with what your kid put on the car.

However, if the code is P0420, then the new cat is probably poor quality,
or your son has likely left an air leak somewhere in the system.

  8. No prob. Thanks, I'm not a mechanic, so I have no freakin
idea( pretty obvious ). I'll have him bring it down to
Autozone to have the code checked. Thanks again.

  9. The error code was for the cat O2 sensor. No prob. I'll
put an O2 Simulator on it. Thanks.

why??? if the oem cat is not causing flow restriction, and i'll bet you
it's not, wtf would you kludge the vehicle like that??? if you want the
vehicle to perform, get it ported and polished. don't **** about with
the input controls that make the vehicle perform properly. you /do/
know that if the ecu's not getting correct input, it doesn't give
    correct output, right?
