I recently had my honda in for preventive maint. and was alarmed to find out
that the carrier bearings are bad and was told I needed a new transmission
at the cost of $3500. What cause this to happen at 80,000 miles and why was
it not detected at earlier preventive maint. appts. is the question I have
been asking myself. Has this been a problem for this model car? Any type of
recall or justification? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Was there any noise mentioned at previous appontments? Carrier bearing
    certainly aren't inspected.
    Trans fluid level OK?

Fluid levels were ok. I heard a thumping sound as if there was a rock
caught in the tire tread and when I couldnt find a rock I brought it in to
find out it was my carrier bearings.

i'm suspicious. "carrier bearings" are more usually found on planetary
type automatics. honda are a completely different design.

can you get your mechanic to be more specific? what symptoms do /you/
    notice?

The differential Carrier bearings only cost 50 each, figure 6 hours shop
    labor total.

    Myself, I charge $125 + parts..........

this is an auto matic isn't it? labor to r&r just the tranny is 5
for an i-4 or 6 for a v-6. then splitting the case,. if the
carrier bearings went then the entire system is contaminated. get
    another tranny.

5 hours???? just to R&R the tranny????

I replace clutches in under 3 hours!!!!

Only takes 10-15 minutes to split the case. Then remove guts, press off old
bearings, press on new, check shim clearance, put case back together,
    install the tranny.

BUT I highly doubt under normal driving and maintance the diff bearings are
    bad.

auto or manual?? a civic clutch takes about 45 min to an hour
max! An oddesy auto tranny swap takes about 2.0 hours max.
again i ask, auto aor manual? i'm was quoting book time,
get into a 1990-1999 civic and the trannys on the floor in 30
minutes, depends on where you are going with this.
i did a rear main seal on a prelude type SH the other day in 4
hours, and those suck to do!! ever deal with ATTS?

  10. Happened on my 2000 Accord at only 48,000 miles. Thankfully Honda
replaced the tranny for free, and then a few months later they extended
the tranny warranties to 100K miles. Got 115K on mine now, gotta keep my
    fingers crossed.
