car is a 96 civic ex with automatic transmission

i've noticed that sometimes (especially on u-turns.. here in metairie/new
orleans we have wide radius u-turns) when coming out of a turn where i
don't stop completely and i need to floor it to keep up with oncoming
traffic.. the car will not shift into a low gear to speed up quickly..
instead it just stays in it's gear and lurches to a higher rpm where it
    eventually picks up speed..

if i'm not mistaken, the car has gradelogic .. could the centrifugal force
of taking the u-turns at about 10-20 mph be what's causing the lack of
downshifting? it's a longshot, but it's the only thing i can think of.
