Broken metal piece inside the engine

When installing a distributor on my 95' Honda Civic EX, I had it 180 degrees
out of time and therefore broke off one of the 2mm x 2mm metal tabs on the
coupling that connects to the cam shaft.

I am reluctant to take apart the valve cover, cam assembly just to find this
metal piece.

My question is: Can I just leave this piece in there? Or will this cause too
much potential damage in my engine?

try draining your oil and see it it comes out??? might?? and also try a
long thin magnetic pickup tool to see if its still in the area where the
distributor is/was located and if it will come up on the magnet???
hope this helps.
