My 1998 Honda Accord handbook specifies API-SJ oil only, but I recently had
an oil change in which they put API-SL in it. Is this okay, or will it harm
    the car?

It's perfect. L is just the latest API standard. "J" was the
standard back in 1997. They're basically going through the alphabet.
My first car was an "F". That's been a couple of decades.

sj was superceded by sk, etc... basically, s(letter same or higher than
    j) is ok

so unless you buy old cans of oil at garage sales, youll be ok.
