Accord coupe

Discussion in 'Accord' started by Ian Lillystone, Sep 5, 2004.

  1. Hello i am from the UK and have recently bought a used Accord coupe which as
we all are aware is US built and i gather a very common car over there.
I have owned several Accords previously and was wondering if any US owners
had experienced the vehicle "using" oil.
I have not had time to analyse how much it is using yet as i have just
realised it was happening and just caught the problem before disaster
struck....hardly any oil showing on the dip-stick yesterday.
All the previous Accords i have owned never needed topping up between
    services.
The car is definately not leaking any fluids and does not seem to be burning
    any from the exhaust.
    Any views would be appreciated.
    It's a 1999 2litre vtec ES Coupe.
    Thanks
    Ian

  3. I'm not sure about whether its the same model or not then, but mines
definately US built according to the plate on front bulkhead.

There are quite a lot of similarities between the model ranges.
For example, my 97 UK Accord Aerodeck 2.0 LSi has the
same body as the US Accord Wagon - the trim is the same
as the LX Wagon. The UK 2.2 ESi has the EX Wagon trim.
Wierd thing is, most of the mechanicals of both cars match
with the EX (for example the 4-2-1 exhaust manifold), so the
2.0 LSi and 2.2 ESi have very little difference in horsepower.
I gather that this is not the case with the LX and EX Wagons.

Anyway, Ian, you need to find out which engine is in your Accord.
Then someone on here ought to be able to tell you which (if any)
US Hondas have the same engine. FWIW, none of the Honda's
I've encountered have ever burnt any oil, so it sounds like there
    might be an issue.

    To answer your question...
I had a Prelude that did the exact same thing. Went through the entire
crankcase of oil between changes from the day I bought it at 50,000 kms to
the day I sold it at 450,000 kms. No leaks, textbook compression and
certainly never blue smoke. Talked to others that had the same observations
and had a dealer tell me its normal.
One more thing: both that Prelude and my present Accord would show dipstick
readings of almost zero when I did bother to check for whatever reason when
there was actually almost 2 liters in the case. This was a concern for me
when I first started noticing the Prelude consuming oil ( no doubt the same
reaction and surprise as you recently had ) as I wondered why my oil light
never came on. Next time you change the oil, throw a litre in it and start
it- you will see the light come on - so it does work. My Accord doesn't
consume oil but I do have to add to it periodically as I have a leak in a
cracked oilpan from hitting roadkill. Even though the dipstick may read
zero, I don't worry about getting to the next service station as I know
    there is oil in it.

Hope that helps you to sleep a little better.

  6. It certainly does, it not so much of a problem now that i am aware of it, i
can keep a eye on it more regularly.
It's just a bit of a mystery cos its most certainly not leaking and does not
appear to be burning it, but i guess it must be cos its got to be going
    somewhere.
Thanks a lot for your help.

    ===============

Hondas _use_ some oil. Get an owner's manual, check oil and other fluids
as the manual describes. (despite what you read on the internet)

Replace the PVC if the consumption gets high. A stuck PCV can suck the
oil vapour out of your engine very quickly.
