My mechanic is still doing diagnostics but tells me I may need a second
catalytic converter in my 98 Accord. The original was replaced by the
dealer under warranty at about 70K mi. The car never gave me problems
until I started commuting 120 miles round trip between New Jersey and the
New York City outer boroughs. That means plenty of top-and-go traffic
with a variety of debris on roads in poor conditions.

I'm at fault as well. Other than oil changes every 3-4K miles I haven't
put a lot into standard maintenance the ca, mostly because I've had to
replace a clutch and front end in the last year. And the check engine
light had been on for several weeks before I brought it in for repairs.

I'm starting a new job next week, in New Jersey. It won't be quite as
long a commute and the roads are in a much better condition. Now I'm
considering whether I need to get rid of the car or stick with it. I was
hoping to get at least 200K but not at the expense of frequent expensive
repairs. What sort of things can I do to minimize emission control
    problems?

    Thanks,

    Joe

good gas, and changing the plugs, oil, and air filter when required.
