My 97 Civic DX (automatic) makes a "clunk" sound when i shift into
drive. I changed the rear mount and the two lower mounts.

This fixed the clunk when shifted into reverse, but its still there
    when i shift into drive.

    My question is....

Will changing the top mounts likely have an effect, or are they there
for a different purpose. Upon visual inspection, neither one looks
    terrible.

Is there a specific mount that the weight of the engine is placed on
    when shifted into drive?

Should i have the tranny looked at instead?

are there any bright spots on the metal parts? if so, the mounting is
defective and allowing the metal bits to knock together.
the two lower front and the central rear are the ones that bear the most
    of it.
possibly. what's the mileage on the vehicle and has it been run for
extended periods with different tires on each side of the front, or one
much more worn than the other? look for other things first though as
these transmissions usually hold up very well.
