I have troubleshot the Ignition switch and it appears to be working. When
the switch is tuned past ACC to the run position none of the idiot lights
come on, not until I try to Start it does the gauges light up and it
cranks and runs until I let up on the starter switch. Is there a relay
after the starter switch that I don't know about?

Most likely this is a problem with the ignition switch itself. Not
    unusual for older cars.

when it starts hold the key slightly forward, if it still runs
without the atarter being engaged , it's the switch part of the
    ignition cylinder.

In my car the fuel pump relay needs an RPM signal to supply power.
