The car was fine yesterday. This morning the idle is rough and almost
stalling, with a smell of rotten eggs. Everything is closed so I
risked taking it for a necessary trip and it's ok cruising at highway
speeds, but is rough when in traffic. It never actually stalled but I
kept putting it in neutral (it's automatic) when stopping.

The distributor is pretty new. I pulled the sparkplug wires and put
them back but that did nothing.

PCV valve? Anything minor I can try before bringing it to the
    mechanic?

I don't know what other info to give. The engine gasket was changed a
few months back. It feels like a cylinder is firing at the wrong time.
There is a smell of sulfur. Oil gets changed regularly but not much
    else.

I guess it could be the PCV valve; that can cause a rough idle but
    this seems something worse.

  4. The only example of a sulphur smell that I've run across is a battery
that was "cooking" due to an overcharging problem.

No, that would even be dangerous. No one wants an exploding battery.

I looked at the battery terminals when I was looking around under the
hood. It looked fine and I didn't see any disconnected hoses that
might explain the misfiring. Well, it's at the mechanic today.

It's really getting near the end for this car I think. It's been
running ok but the rust is getting out of hand. It only has 106,000
which is very low for a 91, but that could be part of the problem. It
mostly just gets used for short trips which is tough on a car.

Every big bill (there have been too many the last few years) makes me
think that it is time to just get a new used car.

Ok, it was a hole in one of numerous little hoses.
