This car has 181K miles on it.
I just got this car running, after buying it in a non-running condition due to a
broken camshaft. It runs well save for no air and a noisy...transmission?

Everything works well, but I get this very apparent noise in the lower gears
when power is applied. It goes away only when idling or with the clutch
applied, then starts when the clutch is out. Pitch varies with road speed,
volume decreases as you go through the gears until you can barely hear it at
cruise. Doesn't sound like a throwout bearing. The sound lessens when you back
off the throttle and just apply enough throttle to maintain a speed. So it's
proportional to power application more than anything.
Sounds to me like a transmission bearing. I drained the fluid of some really
putrid-looking oil, and refilled with Redline 10w-40 racing synthetic. No
    change in the sound whatsoever.
Axles look good, not torn boots, and it doesn't act like a CV joint anyway.
Turning does not affect it at all.
Fr wheel bearings seem OK. I can load them in turns with no change. Off the
    ground they seem smooth.

Is there a common problem with these that fits this description? I don't
mind changing the transmission, since they are cheap and I don't need the car
every day. I'd just hate to go to the trouble only to find out it's an external
source, or something that I can change without dropping the tranmission..

Is that a common failure in these things?
Can it be changed without major disassembly?

    |A common failure beyond 100,000 miles.
    |
    |The tranny must come totally apart to be fixed.
    |Parts are about $20, I charge $80 for the replacement incuding parts if the
    |tranny is delivered to me, like dropped off in person.

    And where are you?

    my CRX forum in TX.

most of the time you can.
Input shaft, if it has any end play or side to side play, the bearing just
inside the case is bad. Also putting the tranny into any gear and rotating
the input shaft, the shaft should feel smooth as you turn it.
