The A/C compressor in a friend's car died. The mechanic said the whole
system would have to be replaced. He said that a reconditioned compressor
could not be used because the 86 - 89 models had problems, and that a newer
system would have to be installed. The estimate is $1300. Is this B.S?

I don't know Honda to produce crappy equipment. Sounds like he's trying to
sell you an aftermarket or jack you. Try this website for a new compressor:

If you don't have the Nippon Denso compressor then he is right. The Keihin
brand is junk. But you don't need "a whole new system". The ND conversion
kit consists of the compressor, the bracket, both hoses, the belt, and a
    receiver dryer.

Thanks. Can you give a fair estimate of a parts and labor?
