2006 Accord Hybrid has intermittent problem of accelerating whenbraking

Discussion in 'Accord' started by Andrew W. Frank, Sep 22, 2007.

  1. 2006 Accord Hybrid has intermittent problem of accelerating when braking at
low speed. Honda is unable to recreate / validate the problem and there are
no error codes to be found.

Does anyone have experience with this, or insight to the problem / solution?

    Thanks in advance.

Can you duplicate the condition predictably?

Have you tried to demo the problem for the dealer?

I have driven Accord Hybrids and what you are likely feeling is the regen
    function.
    Here's what happens:
If the brake pedal is applied enough to turn the brake lights on, the IMA regen
sequence begins. That is, the IMA motor turns into a generator to charge the
IMA battery. At that time the kinetic energy of the car (in motion) is
converted to electrical energy. This action slows the car. If you continue in
the regen mode for the complete stop cycle. The car slows to where the regen
sequence is turned off. At that time if you haven't applied more pressure to
the regular brakes, it feels like the car accelerates. Because, the regen
function is no longer slowing the car and the service brake is not being applied
with enough force to continue the slowing event.
If this is your experience; your car is normal.

  3. I cannot duplicate the condition and the dealer has not been able to observe
    it.

Two different drivers drove the vehicle for 18K+ miles without incident.
Since a major accident, both drivers have experienced this behavior, but it
has only happened 3 times in 2 1/2 months. Somehow, it seems to me, it has
    got to be accident related.

    Thanks for the thoughts ...

I remember when that used to bother me, in my Civic Hybrid. I have long
since gotten used to the sensation.

The only other thing I could offer is the accelerator pedal is getting depressed
    along with the brake.
This happens to me when wearing cross training shoes and don't plant my foot on the
middle of the brake pedal. But rather lift and catch the right side of the pedal.
A friend of mine wears shoe size 16; he says this happens to him, when he's not
careful to lift his foot from the accelerator and plant it on the middle of the
    brake pedal.

No such problem in our 2005 Accord Hybrid.

However in our 2001 Avalon, when the ac shut down as you were braking the
car would speed up. Certainly would wake one up. One of many reasons we
    got rid of the car.
