1999 Honda Accord V4 Automatic Transmission problem / failure

The automatic transmission in my 99 honda accord V4 has failed and the
mileage is only 47500 Miles. This is quite shocking and have been
reading through the forums for some information and I see that all the
cases of transmission failure are related to the V6 models.

Did anyone else also face such a major, abnormal problem with their
accords? The dealer asked me for $4000 for an original Honda
transmission OR $3000 for a Howard (the company that rebuilds
transmissions for Honda). Both come with a 3 year 36000 mile warranty.
Before I get it repaired I WILL take this matter up with the regional
offices of Honda as well as the Honda America. Though I am not sure
about some of the complaints on the forums, I feel some are applicable
    to the V4's.

Anyone faced or heard about a transmission problem in 99 accord V4s'?

    Thanks

I4? yes- the "bad" trannies were V6 models.
not really, but a bad tranny does get through every once in a while.
not a chronic problem. last i remember was a guy a couple years ago in
    san fran.

automatic, right? did you follow the scheduled maintenance, if any? 47k
miles is shockingly low, and i hope theyll at least offer half as a
    goodwill gesture.

otherwise? i wouldnt blame you for never buying another honda... id go
    with a toyota.

Well, I meant the 4 cyclinder. And yes I am by no means an automotive
guru. The dealers and the service specialists do not correct us so
there is no way for knowing the correct terminology!

Thanks for your response. I4? I am not sure but it is the 4 cylinder
one. I am expecting some kind of response from Honda as part of their
goodwill gesture. Yes, I did all the maintenance that is required and
that too only at a Honda Dealership and have all records to that
    effect.

Never thought that Honda or Toyota could end up with such major
problems so early. In any case a lot of people I am aware of have
Hondas and nothing's gone wrong with them. Its just my luck I guess.
In any case I will keep you informed of what happens.

I was looking up NHTSA website and could find 6 cases (that I could
download the original complaint sheet with the VIN and they were 99 4
cyl) but there were a total of 107 records, most of which I am
    guessing were for the V6's.

Hope Honda gets back with some positive response.

  7. I4 refers to inline 4, which is the type of 4 cylinder engine
that a 1999 Honda Accord would have.
Perhaps you can ask if it is possible to replace it with a manual
transmission, since that is usually less expensive, more reliable,
    and more fuel efficient.

i can guarantee they wont go that route. that would mean plumbing for a
clutch, and routing linkage. easier to drop a rebuilt tranny in there.

    SoCalMike:

Honda America got back with an offer. They have agreed to pick up most
of the cost of the transmission. I have to spend on the installation +
a little more. This is going to be an original Honda trany with the
usual 36K or 3 year warranty. I guess they did a service/ maintenance
record check on my car and it was immaculate and all of the were done
at Honda service centers, so I guess that kinda helped.

Quite happy with the decision. I still dont have the exact final
figure but it should be somewhere around 1000. The original cost was
    around 4500.

THought I should let you know.
