  1. The backfire makes me think "timing belt." Has the timing belt been changed
in the last 100K miles or so?

Does it "backfire" out the intake or the exhaust?

when we crank, it backfires, i think the timing is off but we've adjusted it
4 times now with no luck.... any thoughts?

i bought it nonrunning, i've adjusted the timing 4 times, but it just
backfires, i'm guessing it's a problem with the timing obviously since it's
backfiring. whats the firing order? 1-4-3-2?

firing order is 1-3-4-2. check that, then check the valve timing.

I think where Mike is coming from is that the belt might have jumped a
couple of teeth. I'd get a timing light and make sure you are in the
    ballpark.
